To manually retrieve cargo crates you just need to fly over them - unlike previous X games, you don't need to open the cargo bay first (and there is in fact no way of doing so). Be sure to fly directly over the crate, and don't fly too fast. It's also wise to check your ship has enough free cargo space available and can handle the class of cargo required (S, M, L or XL).
To automatically retrieve a single cargo crate you can use the 'Collect Ware' command. This requires a small ship (fighter, TS, TP) with Special Command Software installed, or a freight drone.
- Bring up the ship command console - 'shift-c' (for your personal ship), or select the ship and press 'c' (for a remote ship).
- Select 'Special…'.
- Select 'Collect wares…'. This will bring up the universe map.
- Select the sector containing the crate, and then the crate itself.
The ship will then engage autopilot and head off to collect the cargo.
If you want a ship to automatically retrieve multiple items of cargo there is another command available: 'Collect wares in sector…'. This is similar to 'Collect ware…' but no specific cargo crate is chosen. Instead, the ship will attempt to collect all cargo crates in the selected sector until its cargo hold is full (at which point it will idle in space).
