There are a couple of reasons this might happen:
- The read-only attribute is set for the files (this is normally set if you have copied them back from a CD or similar). You can clear the attribute from the file properties.
- If you previously experienced a crash while the game was saving then it is possible that the temporary save file (X99.SAV) was not deleted, in which case you will need to manually remove it.
