The first rule is not to engage more enemies than you can handle or your ship can survive. If things get too hot, disengage to live another day.
With version 1.4 of the game the AI will be firing lots of missiles, so it is handy to have some Mosquito missiles to fire at the them as they come in. It is also wise to carry a spare shield or two in case one should get damaged during combat.
Basic strategy is to stay on the tail of your target; about 500m - 1km is optimum. Keep your speed slower than the target’s. Combat at slower speeds is easier. When the target turns, continue flying for a second or two then turn yourself. The target should have flown maybe an extra 100-200m away but this will stop the continuous circling which gives your target a chance to recharge their shields.
It is sometimes worth holding some spare missiles more powerful than the Wasp; these can be used to quickly finish off a kill after you have taken down the shields and most of their hull.
