After you get the races living in the X universe to help you, they can upload new information into your ship computer. They can also help you to make your ship compatible with some of their technology. So if you choose to earn a lot of money by trading for example, you can later invest this money in goodies for your ship. So it is always important to make some friends in the X universe. While it might be easier to attack and fight with some races, it sure is not a good idea to become an enemy to all the races in the X universe.
