How do I make a complex setup?

Very complex tactics can be achieved with the use of wingmen and a carrier. An example is the use of a carrier to send up to four waves of fighters against an enemy target. Not a particularly useful example, perhaps, but the technique can be adapted to any number of uses.

To send four waves of fighters from your carrier, you need to have half of them in formation with your carrier, and half of them docked. Half of those in space need to be wingmen, and half of those, which are docked, need to be wingmen. This effectively divides your fighters into four groups.

  • Send wave one against the target - broadcast a command to all wingmen in the sector to attack it.

  • Send wave two against the target - broadcast a command to all fighters in the sector to attack it.

  • While wave two advances, order all docked ships to fall into formation.

  • Send wave three against the target - broadcast a command to all wingmen in the sector to attack it.

  • Send wave four against the target - broadcast a command to all fighters in the sector to attack it.
In reality, it's usually more effective to send all of your fighters at once, but this does illustrate the degree of control that can be exerted on your forces.
