A similar trick is used if you wish to assign a number of your fighters to protect two ships - the main difference being that targets A and B are vessels to be protected (and can include your own ship) and that the "Protect..." command is used.

If your fighters are all protecting your own ship (you are target A), you can order just your wingmen to protect some other chosen ship (for example, one of your transports, or an NPC transport that you've been contracted to protect). Once the escort is no longer needed, Shift+7 will cause them to rejoin those fighters currently escorting you.
