Turning any given fighter into a wingman is done through the ship's command console. There is a toggle on the command console screen called "Wingman" which can be selected as either "Yes" or "No." The default is "No." A wingman must be more than that, to be useful. No fighter can fight alongside you without having some sort of combat software extension installed. Both the "Fight Command Software Extension Mk 1" and the "Fight Command Software Extension Mk 2" need to be installed to make best use of the wingman shortcut commands. Navigation commands are also advantageous. Your wingman should be fitted with weapons and shields. This goes without saying. If you have heavier fighters, it's worth putting larger weapons and shields in to make full use of the more expensive craft's abilities. It's also a good idea to make sure that your wingmen have as many speed and rudder upgrades as you can afford. Rudder in particular can be upgraded far beyond the point that you would yourself be willing to fly.
