How about M4 medium fighter ships for wingmen?

These ships can be used in a similar fashion to the lighter M5s, but are more likely to survive an engagement. They're still a little fragile, but losing one isn't the end of the world when it comes to affording a replacement. They're a good choice for flying wing to a carrier, though, because they're fast enough to keep up.
