In X Rebirth you can change the control profile (i.e. the assignment of keys to the different game functions) in the Settings menu under Controls. The key bindings are saved in a file called "input.xml", which by default can be found in the folder Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth\[your personal Steam ID]\ (or Documents\Egosoft\X Rebirth\ for Non-Steam games). To backup the input.xml, for example when formatting your computer or when moving your installation to a different computer, you can simply copy this file, save it on an usb stick (or the like) and copy it back once you want to restore your control settings.
