While third-party extensions (scripts and mods) can enhance the gameplay, there are also certain risks to take into account before using them:
- The unmodified (vanilla) game is played by the majority of players. Therefore it is easier to get advice and find guides and other information for the vanilla game than for a modified game (i.e. the specific set of mods you have installed). Especially if you're new to the game, you may want to stay away from installing any third-party extensions, until you have a basic understanding of the game's functions and features.
- If automatic Steam Updates are enabled and an update or hotfix is issued, there's a chance that it will break the mod(s) you have installed, until their author(s) update them.
- Third-party extensions may introduce bugs or cause problems that would otherwise not happen in an unmodified game.
- Moreover, if you encounter a technical problem or bug, you will be asked to reproduce it in an unmodified game, as technical support is not provided for modified games.
In any way, before installing third-party extensions it's always a good idea to backup your savegames. That way when you encounter a problem with the latest installed mod, you can easily return to a working savegame. In addition, you should consider only installing one extension at a time, checking its compatibility with your game and other extensions you may have installed, before installing the next one.
Please note: The above mentioned risks do also apply to savegame edits and modifying game files yourself.
