Do I have to start from scratch, once a new update is released? |

No, you don't have to do that. The compatibility of savegames of one version with any following update is usually guaranteed. So if, for example, your last savegames were created in version 1.31, you would still be able to use them, after you have updated your game to version 2.51. What may be possible, however, is that a certain amount of fixes within a patch only affects a new gamestart. The majority of fixes and new features will usually still be available in existing savegames though.
For the unlikely case that an update does require a new start of the game, it will be stated prominently in the relevant update announcement and release notes topics, such as the News and Patch Information thread.
Please note: Savegame compatibility cannot be guaranteed if you have third-party extensions (scripts and mods) installed or if you made changes to your savegames or gamefiles yourself.
Please also note that savegames are not backwards compatible. So version 2.51 savegames will not work in a version 1.31 game.
