You're most-likely entering the Highway in mouse control mode. When you do so, your ship flies towards the direction of your mouse cursor / crosshairs. To counteract this and to stay in the Highway, you have to point the mouse cursor towards the centre of the screen / centre of the Highway tube.
Another possibility to stay in the Highway, is switching to the keyboard control mode (the default key for switching controle modes is the space bar) shortly before entering the Highway. In this case, you steer your ship using the arrow keys. Or you can activate the Autopilot to fly you to your target.
